For a long time, Bill Dudley was a strong advocate of keeping interest rates “higher for longer,” emphasizing the importance of controlling inflation by maintaining or raising short-term interest rates. However, the facts have changed, leading Dudley to change his stance.

According to Bloomberg, Dudley believes the Federal Reserve should lower interest rates, preferably at the upcoming monetary policy meeting. This shift is due to changing economic dynamics, with the U.S. economy showing sustained strength for an extended period, making previous Fed policies less effective.

Generous government measures during the pandemic left individuals and businesses with extra funds to spend, increasing consumer demand. This dynamic was further bolstered by investments from President Joe Biden’s administration in infrastructure, the green transition, and semiconductors, contributing to a rise in the stock market and higher spending by wealthy households.

As this rapid growth continues, side effects have become apparent, with households facing higher interest costs on personal loans and mortgage refinancing. This has led to a slowdown in new housing construction and reduced corporate investments.

Despite a noticeable recent slowdown in inflationary pressures, there remains a clear concern over the risk of an unnecessary economic recession. Unemployment rates have risen slightly, and job vacancies have increased, indicating a slowdown in economic growth and a deterioration in overall economic conditions.

For these reasons, support for lowering interest rates emerges as a necessary step to support the economy and avoid the risks posed by sustained inflation and economic slowdown. Although the decision may face some opposition within the Federal Reserve, the urgency to act swiftly to prevent further economic deterioration remains critical.

Therefore, the Federal Reserve should seriously consider reducing interest rates at the upcoming policy meeting to bolster the economy and mitigate the risks posed by the current economic slowdown.
